Time To Get Reelected

    Advertising

John Thune will be seeking his fourth term as Senator in 2022. Running for reelection can be a difficult task. One of the ways Thune is trying to gain support from his constituents is by frequently visiting South Dakota Businesses. Thune's Twitter account shows him visiting several businesses such as Dakota Panel, Dakota Plains Ag Center, and Taco Johns. Thune also posts about visiting with local governments including the Oglala Sioux Tribe Council Land Committee.  Thune's visits to South Dakota allows him to show his constituents that he is still focused on finding solutions for South Dakota's problems. The decision to post about his visits to South Dakota helps Thune's campaign as it is an effective way of advertising. The use of social media for advertising is effective because it allows Thune to be able to present himself in an ideal manner that will encourage voters to reelect him.

Position-Taking

Another tactic John Thune is using to get reelected is position-taking. An example of John Thune using this tactic is his view on the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. When troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan conflict ensued and created what some people believe was a major foreign policy disaster. In a press release, Thune called for Congress to do a full investigation into the Biden Administration following the "disastrous and chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan." Since Thune's press release, he has also sponsored a bill that would require the Secretary of State to submit dissent cables to Congress regarding the withdrawal of the troops. John Thune's decision to stand against the withdrawal of troops is beneficial because 71% of Americans believed the Biden Administration did a poor or only fair job handling the withdrawal of troops. Thune's stance will motivate voters who disagreed with Biden's administration to vote for Thune.

Homestyle

Homestyle is when members of Congress try to show their constituents that they are "one of us." John Thune shows the use of this tactic on his Twitter. On his Twitter page, there are several examples of Thune trying to show his constituents that "he is one of them." Just this weekend, Thune shared an image with his grandchildren showing how he is a family-oriented man. Thune has also tweeted this weekend about being able to play in the SD State Amateur Tourney Old Timers game. My personal favorite example of Thune's appearing to be like every South Dakotan comes from his Twitter bio where it states "Hates shoveling snow." It is beneficial for candidates if their constituents can relate to them as the constituents may be more likely to vote for them.
